Hot Topics Session

As part of the "How to Get a Job" seminar series, we would like to hold a special "Hot Topics in Computer Science" session where representatives from each area prepare a 5--15 minute presentation about

  1. What's hot in the area?
  2. What particular institutions known for in this area?
  3. What is UCSD known for?

Schedule (updated): Tuesday, Feburary 9 at 3:00 pm -- 6:00 pm (Room 1202)

Volunteers: We are looking for volunteers who can speak authoritatively about their respective areas. Please sign up below.

Closed Polls

  • How to Get a Job Seminar (closed Dec. 16): When would you like the next seminar to take place?
  • Hot Topics format (closed Dec. 16): Should the Hot Topics session be one marathon session (easier to schedule/organize), or 2--3 smaller session (easier to digest)? We will give weight to those who are actually going on the job market this year.
  • Hot Topics Scheduling (closes Jan. 1): When shall we schedule the 3-hour "Hot Topics" session? Please paint your available times in the following WhenIsGood poll.

Job Openings

This is a working list of institutions with job openings, their application deadlines, and any notes about the areas they are emphasizing in hiring. We encourage those with more information to provide links to the appropriate application Web sites or to fill in missing information. All institutions are research-focused seeking tenure-track faculty unless otherwise noted: * denotes teaching-focused universities, and ** denotes post-doc positions.

We encourage folks who are applying for jobs this season to subscribe to the job-hunters@cs mailing list and share announcements about job openings to share experiences about their interviews. (Subscription link)

Resources

There are plenty of resources for career and job application advice. Here is a working list:

  • Michael Ernst's "Getting an Academic Job" (link)

  • Computing Research Association (CRA) jobs postings: (link)

  • Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) jobs postings: (link); particularly relevant for machine learning and bioinformatics.
